Mindfulness In Difficult Times: Keeping in touch with who we really are when it all goes south

“But you cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you try to grasp it. Indeed, you cannot grasp it, just as you cannot walk off with a river in a bucket. If you try to capture running water in a bucket, it is clear that you do not understand it and that you will always be disappointed, for in the bucket the water does not run. To “have” running water you must let go of it and let it run.”
Alan Watts, The Wisdom of Insecurity

What part of your daily self-care routine prepares you for when things go sideways?

For all of the preparations that we can make, what really are the things that we rely on, and that get us through when truly unbelievable things happen? When it seems like people may be relying on you, how can you better rely on yourself?

These are questions I ask myself every day, and I would invite you to do the same; and in that spirit, I would invite you to join me in a five week mindfulness series titled…

Mindfulness in Difficult Times

Fireworks Stand

In this series, which is based on the practices of vipassana, or mindfulness meditation, we’ll address what happens to us when we are confronted with uncertainty. I’ll talk through some of the approaches we can take to make a shift toward reconciling our relationship with ourselves in times like this, and we’ll also take some time to practice some of the kindness and attention we can offer to different aspects of uncertainty and the discomfort that awakens in us when we feel it.
